Course Description: Spanish II is the second of two required beginning foreign language courses. This course will focus on continuing to build vocabulary and grammar skills to be able to communicate effectively in Spanish, as well as promoting cultural understanding and making comparisons between the student's culture and that of the cultures being studied. In addition, this course will focus on cross-curricular applications and how learning a foreign language will help the student both now and in the future.
Course Objectives: As indicated in the Tennessee Standards for Modern Foreign Languages, students in Spanish II will have a target proficiency goal in the Novice High to Intermediate Low Range. Students will be able to:
1) Communicate in a language other than English.
2) Gain knowledge and understanding of other cultures.
3) Connect with other disciplines and acquire information.
4) Develop insight into the nature of language and culture.
5) Participate in multilingual communities at home and around the world.
Text: The textbook for this course is Pearson’s Autentico Level 1. A classroom set of textbooks is available in the classroom for daily use. In the event a student wants to check out a book to take home, the student may do so, provided he/she speaks with me first and signs the appropriate logs.
Classroom Operation: The students will have the opportunity to learn through daily class lectures, PowerPoint/Prezi presentations, videos, songs, games, discussions, debates, reflections, worksheets and individual, partner and small group activities. Students will create an interactive Spanish notebook and use individual whiteboards in class.
Supplies – Students should bring the following supplies to class:
· 1 composition notebook
· Pack(s) of dry erase markers
· 2 different colored highlighters
· Pen or #2 pencil
Dictation/Warm-up Journals
Each day the students will have a Dictation/Warm-up Journal exercise. Students should have all their supplies out and be prepared to begin as soon as the bell rings. The class will discuss dictation/warm-up exercises later in the class period and make corrections using a red pen. Students receive half credit for their initial effort done in blue/black ink or pencil. Students earn the other half of their points by making corrections with a red pen as I go over the assignment.
Make-up work
If a student is absent from class and brings me an excused absence slip, per the Beech High School Student Handbook, the student has the same number of days as missed to turn in any make-up work. A “Make-up work” folder is on the table near the door and any assignments or handouts missed will be placed there. Absent students should also check with a classmate and copy any notes they missed into their interactive notebook. It is the student’s responsibility to check for make-up work and hand it in. I will not remind the student of this in the event of an absence.
Leaving class
Being present in class is essential to language learning. I expect students to take care of personal business outside of class, including trips to the office, guidance, bathroom breaks, snack breaks, etc. No student is allowed to leave class in the 15 minutes before the dismissal bell or 15 minutes after the tardy bell rings.
Ending class
I expect students to remain seated until I say, “¡Adiós!” I dismiss class, not the bell.
Food/Drinks – Food and drinks are prohibited in Sra. Mendoza’s classroom. Students should use their break or lunch for this and should not bring items to the classroom.
Electronic Devices
The use of electronic devices for personal use is prohibited, including but not limited to the use of cell phones, ipads, ipods, mp3 players, etc. Students will place them in the "Hotelefono" when they come into class each day and retrieve them at the end of class. If students do not place their devices in the holder and are seen using them during class without permission, students will be referred to the office for disciplinary action. From time to time, at my discretion, students may have the opportunity to use these types of devices for educational purposes in class. I will clearly state when these activities happen and give instructions about using and then storing these devices.
Head coverings
Head coverings including, but not limited to hats, hoods, headphones, toboggans, berets, masks, etc. are prohibited in Sra. Mendoza’s class. Please remove these articles before entering the classroom.
